Look up Singapore's largest shopping platforms on Google and the numbers are alarming. Lazada holds 1.6. Shopee holds 2.0. Zalora holds 2.3. Meanwhile HipVan, a furniture site most people outside Singapore have never heard of, holds 4.8 from 3,793 reviews. All read on 9 September 2026.

Those numbers are real. The comparison is not, and the reason is worth understanding, because it applies to a lot more than shopping sites.

The listings are not the same kind of thing

PlatformRatingReviewsWhat Google lists it as
HipVan4.83,793Furniture store
Carousell4.2657Corporate office
Zalora2.3180Clothing wholesaler
Shopee2.01,385Corporate office
Lazada1.6386E-commerce service

HipVan's listing is a shop. People who bought a sofa rate the sofa, and most of them are happy, which is how a retail listing usually behaves.

Shopee's and Carousell's listings are corporate offices. Almost nobody visits an e-commerce head office to buy something. The people who find that listing and leave a review are, overwhelmingly, customers whose order went wrong and who could not get the problem solved any other way. A head-office listing is a complaints channel that happens to have stars attached.

Why the biggest platforms collect the worst scores

Scale makes this worse in a way that has nothing to do with quality. A platform handling millions of orders will generate a large absolute number of failures even at a low failure rate, and each of those customers has a strong reason to leave a review while satisfied customers have none. A small retailer with 3,793 reviews collected them from ordinary buyers; Lazada's 386 were collected almost entirely from people with a problem.

That is why 1.6 from 386 reviews and 4.8 from 3,793 cannot be read side by side. One is a sample of everybody, the other a sample of the aggrieved.

What the numbers can still tell you

Compare like with like. HipVan's 4.8 is meaningful against another retail listing. Lazada's 1.6 is meaningful against Shopee's 2.0, because both are the same kind of listing collecting the same kind of review. On that comparison Shopee comes out ahead, and Carousell's 4.2 on a corporate-office listing is genuinely unusual.

Read the review count with the score. Zalora's 2.3 rests on 180 reviews and Shopee's 2.0 on 1,385. The second is far better evidence of a consistent support experience than the first.

Qoo10 has no usable listing at all. Searching for it returns unrelated businesses, so no figure is quoted here rather than a wrong one.

Where this pattern shows up elsewhere

Any business whose Google listing is an office rather than a shopfront will collect this skew: banks, telcos, insurers, delivery companies. When a rating looks impossibly bad for a company millions of people use without complaint, the listing type is usually the explanation.

Online shopping platforms: quick questions

Why is Lazada's Google rating so low?

It sits at 1.6 from 386 reviews as of 9 September 2026. The listing is an e-commerce service rather than a shop, so the people who find it and review it are mostly customers with an unresolved problem. Satisfied buyers have no reason to seek out a corporate listing.

Is Shopee better than Lazada?

On the only comparison the ratings support, Shopee's 2.0 against Lazada's 1.6 on similar listing types, Shopee is ahead. That is a statement about support complaints, not about prices, delivery speed or product range.

Which shopping site has the best Google rating in Singapore?

HipVan, at 4.8 from 3,793 reviews. Its listing is a furniture store, so it collects reviews from ordinary buyers rather than from people escalating a complaint, which is why it is not comparable to the marketplaces.

Should I avoid a shop with a 2-star Google rating?

Check what the listing is first. A 2-star shopfront with a hundred reviews is a warning. A 2-star corporate office for a company processing millions of orders is close to the norm, because only unhappy customers ever find it.

Why does Carousell score higher than Shopee?

Carousell holds 4.2 from 657 on a corporate-office listing, which is unusual for that listing type. Both figures describe how each company handles people who come looking for help, and on that measure Carousell is doing better.

How many reviews make a rating trustworthy?

More than the score itself suggests. Zalora's 2.3 rests on 180 reviews; Shopee's 2.0 on 1,385. The larger sample is the more reliable description of what a support experience is actually like, even though the number is lower.
